Quilted Lattice Stitch

Sample knit with Caron Spa on US Size 6 needles
Cast on a multiple of 6 plus 3

Row 1 and all WS Rows: Purl
Row 2: K2 *Sl 5 wyif, K1* end K1
Row 4: K4 *Insert right needle under strand and K next stitch, pulling new stitch under strand, K5* end last repeat with K4
Row 6: K1, Sl 3 wyif *K1, Sl 5 wyif* end K1, Sl 3 wyif, K1
Row 8: K 1*Knit next stitch under strand as above, K5* end last repeat with K1

Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern.

Love the way this stitch looks. The problem I am having is when I do the second row I end up with a extra stitch, I cast on 21 but it's not coming out right.

It should work out. Your last repeat will be slip five with yarn in front , knit one. Then you have one stitch left, which is just a knit stitch.
