Is this the way a left-hander knits?

Not necessarily. Holding the yarn in the left hand is the continental method of knitting. Many people prefer it over the English method, in which the yarn is held in the right hand.

I wonder if it would be better for me to teach my 12 yr.old granddaughter to knit the continental way rather than the english way? Which would be easier for her to learn? Any left-handers our there to ask?

Show her both ways and let her decide which feels more comfortable. You don't have to be left handed to knit continental.
