Double Garter Stitch

 

Sample knit with DK weight  yarn on US 6 needles

Cast on any number of stitches

Set up row: k1 *knit each stitch, wrapping yarn twice; rep from *

Row 1: knit the first loop only of the first stitch, leaving second loop on the left needle *knit second loop of previous stitch together with first loop of next stitch, wrapping the yarn twice, leaving the second loop on the left needle; rep from *

Repeat Row 1 for the pattern.  

Before binding off, you will need to decrease.  Knit the first stitch, then k2tog to the end of the row.  You will only be wrapping the yarn once, making normal k2tog stitches.  After this row, you should have the same number of stitches you started with and can bind off.

Garter Rib Stitch Variation

 

Sample knit with worsted weight yarn on US 7 needles

Multiple of 5

Row 1 (rs): knit all stitches

Row 2: p1 *k1, p1, k1; rep. from *, end with p1

Repeat these two rows for the pattern.

Garter Stitch Lace Ladder

Sample knit with fingering weight on US 6 needles

Multiple of 4

Row 1(RS): *k2tog, (yo)2, ssk
Row 2: *k1, (k1, p1) into double yo, k1

Repeat these two rows for the pattern.

Peruvian Lace

Sample knit with worsted weight yarn on US 7 needles

This stitch looks great in any weight or fiber, but I think it would look absolutely fabulous in a slinky, drapey fiber like tencel for a summer stole!  Soybean or silk yarn would also be nice for a summer project.

Depending on how you use this stitch, you may want to add some stitches to the sides to neaten things up.  This would make a great scarf, or border on the bottom of a sweater.  So many possibilities!

Multiple of 4 + 2

Rows 1 and 2: knit

Row 3: k1 *knit, wrapping yarn 3 times before dropping from left needle; repeat from * to last stitch, k1

Row 4: k1 *sl 4, dropping extra wraps; slip these 4 long stitches back to left needle and k1, p1, k1, p1 into all 4 together before dropping from left needle; repeat from * to last stitch, k1

Rows 5, 6, 7, 8: knit

Row 9: knit all stitches, wrapping yarn 3 times before dropping from left needle

Row 10: knit all stitches, dropping extra wraps

Repeat these 10 rows for the pattern.

I just love a stitch that gives you bang for your buck - this is one of those stitches.  Using only knits and purls, you get a fabric that looks great on both sides.  And only a two row repeat, so it is easy to memorize.  (Yes, it is hard to tell from the picture.  You can see better in the video!)

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: P2 *K2, P2
